Totally Unexpected!

The next morning I woke up half an hour late. I walked to the bathroom and wiped off all of the make-up which had smudged under my eyes and re adjusted my hair. I was going to call Ace but I thought he would probably be busy at work. I poured myself some cereal and sat alone in my apartment eating it slowly. I had 3 missed called from Billie but I didn't feel like talking to her. I slipped into my work uniform and drove into work.

“Late!” Amy laughed from behind her desk as I walked through the door. I smiled.

“Caught me, is Michael in yet?” I groaned feeling exhausted.

“Nope, luckily for you he’s stuck in traffic,” she smiled, typing away, “but there’s an appointment booked in 5 minutes and you’re going to need to cover for him,” she told me. I nodded.
“Fun,” I replied.

I walked into the examination room and sorted everything out for the appointment, I checked the computer and thankfully it was only a guinea pig booked in for his teeth to be trimmed down which I could do this early in the morning. A few moments later I got an email from Amy telling me the woman was here.

“Morning,” the lady smiled walking into the room carrying a purple pet carrier.

“Morning Mrs Cole, it’s only me, Dr Charnley Isn't in this morning,” I told her.

“Oh, I see,” she laughed, placing her pet carrier onto the examination table.

“Tibs isn't it?” I asked opening the carrier door a pulling out the black and white guinea pig.

“Yup, Tibs today, his teeth are just getting a bit too long, need a trim don’t you tibby,” she laughed.

Luckily Tibs was very tame and Mrs Cole helped me hold him down which was usually my job. It felt good being on my own for a change without Micheal watching over my shoulder or pushing me aside. Just as she was leaving Michael rushed through the door, his bag slung over his shoulder and a coffee cup in his hand.

“Mrs Cole! Good morning has everything been okay for you?” he smiled, dumping his bag down.

“Oh perfect, Miss May here’s been brilliant,” she smiled, nudging me gently. I blushed.

“Oh really, that’s great,” he said looking surprised, “have a great day.”

After she left Michael and I were alone.
“Thank you for covering for me today,” he smiled. I nodded. “And I’m sorry for all the tension between us, things have been difficult at home,” he sighed, “but I shouldn't have taken it out on you, I apologise,” he said placing his hand on my shoulder. I smiled.

“It’s fine, I’m having… problems as well.” I told him.

“If you ever need any help, don’t hesitate to call me, I promise it won’t be like last time,” he said.

“Thank you,” I replied but it still felt a little awkward.

When I got back home I collapsed onto my sofa. I hadn't even thought about dinner yet even though my tummy had been rumbling all day. I checked my phone and I noticed I had even more missed calls from Billie but I still didn't know what to say to her. I was about to get up when suddenly it hit me. Did Matt say EX fiancĂ© when he came over last night? Something must have happened I thought. I suddenly felt guilty, what if it was my fault. I threw on a baggy cardigan and rushed over to their apartment.

“Hey, do you wanna chat?” I asked standing at the door. He nodded his head.
From the moment I walked in I felt the emptiness hit me. All around me were brown boxes and empty spaces where things should have been.

“It’s serious then?” I asked, my eyes still scanning the place.

“Yup, she’s gone to stay with her mum while she finds a new place, meanwhile I’m stuck with all this junk,” he said kicking one of the boxes with his foot.

“Wow, listen I’m sorry,” I said softly. I really did feel bad for him; although I was happy he finally saw her true colours I could tell he was really hurting.

“It’s cool, it happens sometimes, do you want some tea?” he asked. I nodded. I watched him disappear into the kitchen and then I sat down on his sofa.  Looking around I realised how nice this place must have looked with all the stuff still in it. It was very modern and mainly silver with hints of purple which gave it a homely relaxed feel. Matt emerged from the kitchen holding a steaming mug of tea.
“Here,” he said placing the tea in front of me. I thanked him and watched him sit down.

“So, do you mind me asking what happened?” I asked.

“She… she cheated on me,” he said, he didn't look sad anymore he looked kinda angry. I nodded slowly. “I mean, she’s a model, she’s damn attractive, I knew it would happen eventually, but not this soon and certainly not with her,” I tried to look surprised even thought I knew quite well. “Yup, she likes the play for the other team every now and then” he laughed angrily.

“Right…” I said wishing I hadn't come over now, it was kinda awkward.

“It’s fine fancying girls, I had no problem with that, but for her to think I was wrong because I didn't want to watch her... screwing another woman-”

“Its okay,” I said watching him turning angrier. He then realised and stopped.

“I’m sorry, I’m so rude,” he walked over and sat beside me on the sofa. “You were crying last night,” he said.

“Yeah, I had a fight with this guy I know, he’s been… he’s just not in my life anymore,” I said softly. I felt him reach out and hold my hand. I kinda felt relieved that I wasn't the only person having problems right now and I had someone to understand how it felt to miss somebody.

“So were both in the same boat,” he laughed. I smiled.
“Jeez Scarlett, you know what the first thing I thought when I met you was?” I looked blankly at him. “I thought why the heck wasn’t I single still!?” he laughed.

“Matt wait…” I tried to say realising he had gotten the wrong idea. I quickly pulled my hand away.

“but now I am, and I’m happy being single” he then reached over and placed his hand on my face. I stared at him speechless. “Because now I can have you,” he lent in and was about to kiss me on the lips when I suddenly shoved him away from me.

“What are you going? James is not my boyfriend!” I burst.

“Woah, what?” he replied going slightly red with embarrassment.

“The guy I was crying over, he was my friend…. I have a boyfriend who I’m happy with!” I shouted.

“Then why did you come over?” he asked standing up.

“To see if you were okay!” I replied standing up too.

“Oh god Scarlett!” He said turning away from me.

“I’m, I’m going to leave.”

I quickly ran out of his apartment and back into mine. I could hear him calling after me but I ignored him. As soon as I got back into my apartment I felt like the stupidest person alive. Why had I gone over there? I asked myself, why was I so stupid to say it like that; he obviously thought I had just broken up with someone too. I then felt incredibly guilty. What if he had managed to kiss me? What would I have told Ace?

Would you tell your partner if someone tried to kiss you or am I just over reacting ?!
